During this Covid time, many people are wanting to work online, from home.
They may wish to be an online virtual assistant or work digitally in a job where they require skills in office programs.
However, there may be gaps in their knowledge, that they need to learn, so that they have the best chance of finding work.
If you have worked in an office or online, you may have skills that they need to learn.
They may not want to take an entire course, but just brush up on some skills and learn a few new skills.
You can start an Online Business, teaching one to one, or small groups virtually, via Zoom or Skype.
There are other video conferencing tools available, but I prefer to use Zoom.
Zoom is very easy to use.
Zoom is free one to one for as long as you like, but you have limited free time when talking to more than one person (usually 30-45 minutes) before you pay anything at all.
In my years of online teaching, I have found that usually just sharing a screen is all that is needed, but you can also give each other remote control, should you wish to.
This could also expand into creating and selling small, bite-sized online courses, should you wish to take it further.
You could have a unique online tutoring or training business, that meets the specific needs of people who at this time are desperate to find some sort of online work that they can do from home.
Before you decide if this is the way that you would like to go, I would like to address some barriers that people often have, to start their own online tutoring or training business.
There are obstacles that I faced myself when I was starting out, years ago.
I’ve been running my own successful business, teaching adults how to use Microsoft Office and other relevant office programs since 2002.
This later expanded to sales and reception skills and also literacy skills.
In the beginning, however, I faced many self-limiting beliefs; doubts and fears and feelings of what is now known as ‘Imposter Syndrome’.
Imposter Syndrome is when you doubt your own abilities and that anyone would want to learn from you.
It often includes doubts that you need more qualifications and fears of what people will think.
I also didn’t have much money to start a business. In fact, I needed the business to make more money, not spend it.
Luckily, this type of business only requires the bare basics and you can reap the rewards very quickly if done correctly.
Despite all my reservations, fears, and even at times, anxiety, I have now been running my successful business since 2002.
It began as in person but later evolved to include online.
Nowadays, with the risks to health from the Corona Virus, online is a great option to have.
However, once the Covid threat is no longer an issue, you can offer both in-person and online.
You can work from home, at minimal cost, sharing the knowledge and experience that you already have.
It isn’t essential that you have 5 degrees and 20 years of experience (ok I am exaggerating, but you get my point).
If you have knowledge and experience in something, then there are other people who want to learn from you.
If you have worked using a computer in the past, for example, it may be that they want to learn everything that you know about how to use a program that you have used quite a lot.
A Microsoft Office program such as Word, Excel or Outlook, or using Facebook or Xero are just a few of a huge number of examples.
They may also just want to fill in a few gaps in several areas.
There may be other areas of skills and knowledge that you have, that people want to learn.
Who may want to learn these things from you?
– Anyone wanting to upskill or fill in some gaps in their knowledge
- Joe Bloggs down the road, having trouble using a basic program e.g. emails or photos
– The older age group who had never learned the basics
– Small Business Owners
– Virtual Assistants
– Digital PA
